Understanding Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Identities

This two-part workshop, presented in sign language, is designed for Deaf and signing communities, educators, students, social workers, sign language interpreters, and anyone else interested in learning.

The first part of this workshop will focus on understanding transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) identities, language use, and will include a panel discussion with TGNC identified panelists. The second half of the workshop is open to interpreters and interpreting students and will focus on interpreting for TGNC consumers.
CEU’s available for RID Certified Interpreters, Social Workers, and Teachers.

Presenters:
Alex Jackson Nelson, LGSW, NIC, identifies as Transgender and has eighteen years of experience working in and for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and Intersex (LGBTQI) community. He has provided consulting and training to thousands of service providers and ASL interpreters around the country. Alex graduated from Gallaudet’s Master of Social Work program, and has been a certified interpreter for ten years.

Josi Krueger is a Deaf interpreter and a transgender woman who lives in Seattle, Washington. She has been interpreting since she was in elementary school for fellow classmates and in more formal settings such as doctor’s offices as an adult. Josie was adopted and now lives with her biological family.
