Keeper of the Light
November 19, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
$5 – $25
KEEPER OF THE LIGHT, a new physical theater piece from devised theater creator and performer Katie Kaufmann, follows an unlikely bond between a modern woman and Ida Lewis, the first woman lighthouse keeper made famous for her heroic rescues at sea in the 1800s.
Incorporating physicality, song and shadow puppetry, KEEPER OF THE LIGHT explores isolation, obsolescence, and perseverance, finding parallels between motherhood and the duty of light keeping.
KEEPER OF THE LIGHT is based on the true story of Ida Lewis who took over as a lighthouse keeper in Newport, Rhode Island in 1857 at age 15 when her father suffered a stroke. Lewis quickly became known as "America's Heroine” after rescuing 3 soldiers from a local army base from drowning in the waters off the coast. Throughout her career, she fought for recognition as a woman doing a man's job as she worked tirelessly to tend her light. It was only after 22 years of service and rescuing over 18 people that she was officially appointed to her father’s post.
